What Causes Back Pain?
Back pain is a prevalent issue that affects a significant portion of the population, with approximately 80% of adults experiencing it at some point in their lives. The causes of back pain are varied, including poor posture, sedentary lifestyles, heavy lifting, or degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis.
Statistics show that back pain is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, contributing to missed workdays and reduced quality of life.
Chronic back pain can be particularly debilitating, leading to persistent discomfort, limited mobility, and an increased risk of depression and anxiety. The impact of back pain extends beyond physical suffering, often interfering with daily activities, making it difficult to perform even simple tasks like walking, standing, or sitting for extended periods. Addressing back pain early is crucial to preventing it from becoming a long-term, disabling condition.
Subluxations
Subluxations can occur in a number of ways. A car accident, athletic injuries, birth trama, pregnancy, a fall, sudden jar, or other traumas are all examples of unique instances that may cause a subluxation. The other occurrence of subluxation comes from regular actions such as improper sleeping position, poor posture, or incorrect lifting processes.
First your spine loses its normal balance. There may be a loss of normal spinal curves. Your nerves may be affected and the vital life energy that flows over them is interfered with. Also your joints, discs, nerves and posture are stressed and age more quickly. Surprisingly, there may be no pain other than occasional minor discomfort. Also present may be a slight lessening of energy and slight height loss. Response to spinal care is generally good.
Here there is a much greater degree of decay, disc narrowing and bone spurs (deformations); postural changes are much worse. This condition is very common (by age 40, 80% of males and 76% of females exhibit moderate disc degeneration). Spinal canal narrowing or stenosis may occur. This phase is characterized by more common aches and pains, fatigue, and a diminished ability to cope with stress. Height continues to decrease. With chiropractic care significant improvement is possible.
Here there are more postural imbalances, increased nerve damage, permanent scar tissue and advanced bone deformation. Physical and/or mental weakness or disability begin. Also found in this phase are permanent loss of height and loss of energy. With care some reversal is possible.
This is the most advanced stage of subluxation degeneration. The postural imbalance is severe and motion is limited. There is severe nerve damage, permanent scar tissue is formed and the bones may begin to fuse. In this phase we find pain, various degrees of physical or mental disability, and continued loss of energy and height. By now the condition is considered irreversible, although chiropractic may give some symptomatic relief.
✅ Headaches: Frequent headaches that may come on suddenly.
✅ Fatigue: Feeling unusually tired or weak, even after resting.
✅ Slow-healing wounds: Cuts or sores that take longer than usual to heal.
✅ Radiating Pain: Pain that spreads from the back to other areas, such as the hips, legs, or buttocks, often due to nerve involvement like sciatica.
✅ Limited Range of Motion: Reduced ability to bend, twist, or move the back freely, which can make daily activities challenging and painful.

The top five most common causes of back pain are:
Muscle or Ligament Strain: Overexertion, heavy lifting, or sudden awkward movements can cause strains in the muscles or ligaments in the back, leading to acute or chronic pain.
Herniated or Bulging Discs: The soft cushions (discs) between the vertebrae can rupture or bulge, putting pressure on nearby nerves and causing pain, often in the lower back.
Arthritis: Osteoarthritis, in particular, can affect the lower back, leading to pain and stiffness due to the degeneration of the joints and narrowing of the space around the spinal cord (spinal stenosis).
Skeletal Irregularities: Conditions like scoliosis (a curvature of the spine) can cause chronic back pain due to the uneven distribution of weight and pressure on the spine.
Poor Posture and Sedentary Lifestyle: Prolonged sitting, particularly with poor posture, weakens muscles and puts strain on the spine, leading to back pain over time.
Many people want to know when their back pain is serious enough to require professional medical attention, particularly if they are experiencing symptoms like severe pain, numbness, weakness, or pain that doesn't improve with rest.
Chronic back pain can often be managed effectively and, in some cases, significantly reduced or even reversed, but it depends on the underlying cause, the duration of the pain, and the treatment approach.
Here’s how it can be addressed:
Targeted Treatment: If chronic back pain is due to a specific issue like a herniated disc, spinal misalignment, or muscle strain, treatments like chiropractic care, or spinal decompression can address the root cause and potentially reverse the pain.
Lifestyle Changes: Adopting a healthier lifestyle, including regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and improving posture, can alleviate pressure on the spine and strengthen the muscles supporting the back, leading to a reduction in chronic pain.
Pain Management Techniques: Techniques such as Chiropractic care, decompression therapy, and stress management can help reduce pain levels and improve quality of life. These methods focus on retraining the body and mind to manage and reduce the perception of pain.
Advanced Therapies: Therapies like regenerative medicine, shockwave therapy, or spinal cord stimulation can offer new avenues for reducing or eliminating chronic back pain by promoting healing and reducing inflammation.
While it’s possible to reverse chronic back pain, especially if addressed early and with the right treatments, some individuals may only achieve pain management rather than complete reversal. The goal is often to improve function, reduce pain to a manageable level, and enhance quality of life.
Chiropractors can play a crucial role in alleviating back pain by using advanced therapeutic techniques designed to improve spinal health.
These therapies work by gently stretching the spine, which can help retract herniated or bulging discs, relieve pressure on nerves, and promote the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the affected areas, facilitating faster healing.
Additionally, some techniques use low-intensity shockwaves to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes, reducing inflammation, increasing blood flow, and accelerating tissue repair. Chiropractors use these approaches to target the root cause of back pain, providing relief from discomfort, improving spinal alignment, and enhancing mobility.
This comprehensive, non-invasive treatment plan offers significant pain relief, improved spinal function, and a better quality of life, all without the need for invasive procedures or medication.
Addressing the root cause of your back pain is the first step toward reclaiming your life and preventing further discomfort.
Don’t let back pain hold you back any longer; schedule your Back Pain Relief consultation today and take the first step towards a life of comfort and mobility!
